I use a basic Canon desktop scanner, and I always need to do some Photoshop correction to get the scan to match the original art. I usually play around with the levels first to get the contrast to match. Then I generally have to clean up the white areas with the magic wand and eraser tools because the scanner picks up the paper texture. Using a smoother paper helps.
