About the Concert - Our concert for Holy Week features two contrasting masterpieces by contemporaries Domenico Scarlatti and J.S. Bach (both born in 1685). Scarlatti's remarkable Stabat Mater, scored for ten independent voice parts, is an outstanding example of Italian polyphony, with melodic motifs and dissonances reminiscent of Monteverdi. Jesu Meine Freude is the greatest of Bach's six motets and represents the finest achievement of the German Baroque.

Barbara and I found this skull at the old drying house, near the site of the long-gone sawmill in Baldwin's Mills.

It's 108mm long, 70mm wide. The closest I could find to it on the internet is a female Fisher, but I can't be certain.

I find women are much easier to capture in watercolour.

She had a lot of tattoos, but I didn't have time to include them except for this one:

I have been using blue for the negative space lately. My water gets unusable much quicker, but I find the finals have a much stronger impact.

I will be taking jewelry classes of Tuesday nights for the next two months, so Rouge is out for a while. Here are a few drawings from the Toronto School of Art Sunday night session this week.

For a bit of a change this week, I did most of the gestures with a black marker.

This model's shape presented some interesting challenges.

I like to use a mix of Winsor & Newton Opera Rose and Naples Yellow. My scanner has a bit of trouble capturing the vibrancy of the opera rose, and it certainly has difficulties with textured watercolour paper!
I like the negative space framing the foot above! I always have trouble with feet.

Denise Mader is a fantastic model. Her poses are always so dynamic! I have been taking my watercolours to the Rouge gallery life drawing sessions where she models on Tuesday nights. The gallery is on Queen at Broadview, and the $15 three hour sessions include delicious baked goods created by Denise herself!
